Small Organs
Our small organs are suitable for church, school or home practice use. The Curtis and Good Shepherd organs are identical in pipe content, but the dramatic difference in appearance shows our ability to adapt these organs to the situation, as required. And what is not readily apparent is that these organs, like our larger instruments, are custom scaled and voiced to suit the situation. Additional features that may be added, include extra pipe ranks, expression boxes, and combination pistons on the console.

Impressed with an organ our firm had built for a nearby sister church, we were approached by John Southern, chairman of the organ committee at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, to see if we might have some ideas for their committee, which had already been active for several years.
They were hoping to find an existing instrument that would work in their space, to replace the small one-manual tracker organ which, though it had served well for a number of years, was extremely limited.
As we contemplated their situation over a period of months, we were made aware of a "pipeless" 1986 Schlicker organ in Pennsylvania. Mechanically complete, it was attractive to us as organ builders, because we could select, scale and voice our own pipes.
The existing material was in excellent condition. We used all the available notes on the chests and added a chest each on the front and back of the main one. Case skirting, which already matched the woodwork in the church, was extended to enclose the additions, and a swell box was constructed. The wood pipes of the new 16' Bourdon were stained to match, new pipes were provided by Stinkens, Matters and Oyster, and the electro-mechanical switchgear of the console was gutted and replaced with a modern solid-state system.
Though actually on "unit" chests, the stop list is conceived as a straight organ, and is provided with regular couplers. The fact that no rank plays at multiple pitches on the manuals, allows the organ to develop a clean, full ensemble sound, providing excellent registrations for congregational and choral accompaniment, and playing of the literature.
At our suggestion, the congregation agreed to move the altar and communion rail forward and place the organ front and center, where it looks good and projects well, into the room.
We cannot say enough about the pleasant dealings we had with this church, and we are extremely proud of this organ. We regard it as new, because the resulting instrument plays and sounds like one of our organs. The concept, whether using existing or all-new equipment, is viable for many small churches desiring a good church-service-playing instrument, capable of years of reliable service far exceeding that of electronic substitutes.
Tamara Lewis is organist and director of music.
